BAF MS_00086 Civil Rights collection, 1933-2003
The Civil Rights collection consists of material relating to the civil rights movement from 1933 to 2003 collected by staff of The Black Archives.  The materials document: assimilation; black astronauts; prominent black individuals in local, state and national government; blacks in the military; elections; inmate pardons, executions and stays; local and national black headlines of the day; Negro achievements; police shootings and brutality against black males; political rallies;  and voting rights and violations.  The bulk of the collection is composed of magazine articles, newspaper articles, programs and reports.
BAF MS_00015 Clyde Killens papers, 1930-1960
This collection contains information on Clyde Killens, "Mr. Entertainment," and the entertainment, or "Little Broadway," era of the Overtown area in Miami. This collection includes audio tapes, correspondence, flyers, newspaper articles, memorabilia, and photographs.  This collection also contains information on Overtown hotels, featuring the David Probinsky Memorial Collection. Probinsky donated many items dealing with the Sir John Hotel in Overtown.  See "Other URL" for more information.
BAF MS_00096 Dade County Public Schools Bi-Racial/Tri Ethnic Committee records, 1969-1995
This collection consists of the records of the Bi-Racial/Tri Ethnic committee from 1969-1995 donated by Dr. Gordon Foster who was one of the Chairmen of the committee.  The records reflect the organization's activities relating to the plan for desegregation of Dade County Public Schools (DCPS) and staff, high school, court orders, personnel workshop, attendance zones, court appeals, school closing, busing, parents issues, pairing of schools, new schools, membership, school zoning, records and federal law regulations.  The bulk of the collection is composed of newspaper clippings, minutes, correspondence, reports, court orders, court appeals, personnel studies and construction plans.  The collection does not contain financial documentation.
BAF MS_00107 Miami Dade "Impact of Transportation Projects on Overtown" oral history records, 1996-1998

The collection consists of oral histories and papers prepared by The Black Archives and Florida International University (FIU) for the Metropolitan Planning Organization, a department of Miami Dade Transit, between 1996 and 1998.  The records were created in response to a request from the Miami Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization for a study on the "Historical Impact of Transportation Projects on the Overtown Community."  The study was requested after a Dade Commissioner blocked a Florida Department of Transportation plan to build an elevated Metrorail line through Overtown  in 1996. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which the Overtown area has been historically affected by major transportation projects and to suggest possible mitigation measures that would help preserve its integrity as a viable neighborhood and community in the future. The final report, "The Historical Impacts of Transportation Projects on the Overtown Community," was prepared by the Institute of Government, Florida International University, March, 1998.

The Black Archives received a grant from Florida International University to conduct the oral history component of the project.  The oral histories were referred to by The Black Archives as the "FIU Tell the Story" project.

The records in this collection include administrative files and oral history interviews and transcripts.  The oral histories discuss family and education, employment, neighborhood life, and the expressways (I-95, I-395, State Road 836, Metrorail).  Transcripts are also available at the University of Florida Samuel Proctor Oral History Program.  The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program has made 41 of 55 oral history transcripts available online:

BAF MS_00061 Miami-Dade Model City Program records, 1968-2004

The collection consists of materials relating to the Miami-Dade Model City Program donated by Dr. Foster in 1980 and supplemented by staff of The Black Archives.  The bulk of the collection consists of materials donated by Dr. Foster.  The materials document the administration of the Miami-Dade Model Cities Program and businesses and services created or impacted by Miami-Dade Model Cities Program.  The bulk of the collection consists of photographs; other types of materials include:  directories, flyers, manuals, minutes, newspaper articles, and reports.  Although newspaper articles contained in the collection discuss funding, the collection does not contain extensive primary source financial documentation.


The Model Cities Program grew out of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 1966 cities Demonstration and Metropolitan Development Act.  The Act was designed to coordinate federal, state, local and private resources in a comprehensive plan to substantially improve the social and physical conditions of blighted neighborhoods. The Model Cities Program's initial goals involved rebuilding and rehabilitating social service delivery, and emphasized citizen participation. In 1975, the Model Cities Program moved from HUD administration to a division under the Human Resources Department and was renamed the Community Development Division.


Sixty-three Model City Planning Grants existed for which there were two hundred applications from all parts of the country.  In June 1969, HUD approved the Miami-Dade Model City Plan for the area bounded on the north by N.W. 79th Street, on the south by the Airport Expressway, on the east by I-95, and on the west by N.W. 37th Avenue.   The Miami-Dade Model City was awarded 9.6 million dollars per year for five years.
